The Scene
This compact space, hidden in the Midtown Promenade, combines filmy red-and-white curtains, chocolate-brown upholstery, fresh-cut flowers, dramatic lighting, elegant bamboo-shaped silverware and charcoal drawings of women to create a sensuous vibe. Lithe female servers in traditional floor-length pink chemises provide gracious service to an urbane crowd that spans ages and races.
The Food
Subtly complex, each dish is layered with the sweet, salty, spicy and sour flavors of Vietnam. Spongy rice-flour tamale stuffed with pork, shrimp and mushrooms is steamed in a banana leaf and ladled with fish sauce. Diners scoop addictive lotus root salad with shrimp and crushed peanuts into rice shells that snap, crackle, pop. Crispy pillows of lemongrass tofu with scallions and delicate steamed sea bass in a piquant ginger sauce are refreshing choices. Brined, chile-caramelized claypot chicken is melt-in-your-mouth tender.
