What started as a fleet of wooden benches in Hollywood's Bolton Canyon has grown into a sweeping outdoor venue that hosts some of the best names in music. Everyone from Frank Sinatra to Radiohead, Luciano Pavarotti to the Who has taken the famed stage. A new shell was erected in 2004, and Frank Gehry's spheres have been replaced by a more acoustically sound halo, which also incorporates lighting and sound equipment. Come July, the L.A. Philharmonic lures concertgoers to the hills with its elegant shows under the stars. Special events such as the Fourth of July Fireworks Spectacular, John Williams' Movie Memories and the Playboy Jazz Festival round out the summer lineup. And the Bowl experience isn't complete without picnicking on the grounds, a cherished tradition among many Angelenos. Bring your own spread, or have the Patina Group prepare an exquisite dinner served right in your box.
