reserva brut cava penedes, spain. raventos is one of our favorite estates in catalonia. the families' winemaking roots dates back over 500 years in penedes, and the exceptional quality of their wines further proves their passion. this biodynamic blend of 60% macabeo, 20% parellada and 20% xarel-lo is expansive and elegant. it spends a minimum of 15 months on the lees, and shows a beautiful balance of minerality, white peach, fresh floral notes and brioche.
jacquere "brut" savoie, france. this beautiful sparkler comes from the high-elevation rocky vineyards surrounding the alpine village of chignin. 100% jacquere, entirely hand-harvested from 50+ year-old vines, organically farmed, and primary fermentation on ambient yeast are a few reasons it so delicately displays the areas distinct terroir. the remaining vinification is done methode traditionnelle same as in champagne- finishing with michel's own special liqueur de tirage topping off each bottle prior to corking. the soft mousse and rich texture reveal layered flavors of white peach, toasted almond, sea salt, creamy lees, and a touch of carob.
riesling kamptal, austria . after signing a 3-generation lease in 1996, mickey moosbrugger took over as caretaker/winemaker of the 11th century castle schloss gobelsburg. with the help of willi brundlmayer, mickey has quickly transformed gobelsburg into one the finest estates in austria. this über-fresh riesling comes primarly from the younger vines on two of our favorite sites, heiligenstein and gaisberg. meduim-bodied, with racy acidity, it's showing crisp orchard fruit, fennel, quinine, and a finish of pure minerals.
"steinriegl" riesling federspiel wachau, austria. prager will make you smarter! drinking one of toni bodenstein's terroir-driven rieslings is like entering a portal into the unique geological diversity that makes up the wachau valley. his vines soak up the eccesence of their soils and display them back into the glass with wonderful clarity. this '09 steinriegl is bone-dry showing fresh clementine, lemongrass, and quince, with a slight creaminess, all encompassed by tons of primary rock.
estate riesling nahe, germany . it always amazes us how helmut donnhoff is capable of producing some of germany's best bottlings each and every vintage. this off-dry '10 estate is a blend of multiple sites and shows the power and elegance of the nahe with racy acidity and flavors of tangy peach, cinnamon spice, white lily and gray slate. this one begs for a second glass.
getariako txakolina basque country, spain. back by popular demand, this staff favorite will have your taste buds singing. comprised of two native basque varietals hondurribi zuri and hondurribi beltza, there are few wines on the planet as refesheing as txakolina. this light-bodied, high-acid wine shows bright citrus and mouthwatering salinity, with a light sparkle that refuses to let you stop at just one. enjoy!
melon de bourgogne muscadet sèvre et maine loire valley, france. this bone-dry vibrant bottling from marc ollivier has everything there is to love about muscadet. its huge mineral presence dominates the nose, while the combination of racy acidity and extended lees aging adds great texture and length to the palate. its very clean high-toned flavors of lemon zest, granite, snap pea, and sea-spray will leave you begging for a second glass.
"clos de guichaux" chenin blanc samur loire valley, france. romain guiberteau is one of our favorite growers in the loire. guichaux is a very special clay/limestone site of younger vines that he has farmed on biodynamic principles since he planted it. this dynamic '08 spent 13 months in used oak barrel and has integrated beautifully over the years. its elegant texture and focused acidity open the door to an extraordinary range of flavors you'll taste into the morning. don't miss this one!
chardonnay chablis, france. now being run by gilberts two sons, didier and pascal, this domaine has really caught our attention with the cut and precision of their steely chardonnays. this chablis is harvested from 12 different parcels and undergoes slow alcoholic and malolactic fermentation in stainless steel. it's showing everything we love from chablis in 2010, with plenty of acid lift and lean flavors of green apple, lemon zest, oyster shell, creamy lees and kimmerigian limestone.
gewürtztraminer finger lakes, new york. dr. frank started his estate in 1962. after nearly a decade of studying the climate and soils of the finger lakes region he knew there was potential and was determined he could produce "world-class" wines in a region often associated with the idea. this '10 gewurtz shows everything we love in the varietal, bright aromatics of fresh tropical fruit and fennel, vibrant acidity, and flavors of clementine, basil and white pepper.
spätburgunder rheinhessen, germany. this organic pinot noir rosé brilliantly displays the limestone slopes of the rheinhessen! it's medium-bodied and super fresh, showing juicy watermelon, sea salt, and bracing acidity alongside a mild strawberry seed-like bitterness that begs for a second glass.
gamay blend vin de france. olivier is quickly becoming one of the top natural wine producers in the loire valley. after years of working retail in paris and several vintages working with marcel lapierre in beaujolais, olivier started his own estate with the idea that wines should be naturally farmed, fermented and bottled without so2 to best express their terroir. this field blend of 40% gamay, 30% grolleau and 30% côt (malbec) is incredibly lively showing ripe cherry, dried lavender, bitter grape seed and chewy tannin.
syrah brezeme cote du rhone, france . eric texier is one of the busiest producers in the rhone valley, where he produces between 15-20 different wines every vintage. by using only ambient yeast whole cluster fermentions, tiny sulfur additions, and biodynamic farming methods his wines are perenially some of the most rustic expressions of their specific aoc. all syrah, this primitve brezeme is light to medium-bodied and very taut, with racy acidity and flavors of tart cherry, black peppercorn, flint, chalk and dark chewy tannins.
cabernet franc bourgueil loire valley, france. regarded as one of the most influential couples in the loire for over a decade, catherine and pierre are quietly making some of the coolest "natural" wines in bourgueil and vouvray. this bottling "les galichets" is from a gravelly organic single vineyard that surrounds their home. its silky texture softly displays flavors of brambly black fruits, rosemary, cassis, chalk, and green pepper with restrained dark tannin.
"cuvee vignals" syrah blend minervois, france. coupe roses has been a long time favorite languedoc producers of ours. with significant holdings in some of the minervois's best vineyards, their several cuvees have become a standard in the region. this bottling is primarly syrah with some grenache and old-vine carignan, it's pretty weighty, showing a cool combination of floral and funky aromatics along with flavors of dried cherry, black pepper, carob and barnyard.
refosco/mavrodaphne vin des letinon, greece. from the western edge of the peloponnesus, from a place surrounded by palm trees and pines and a salty sea breeze, comes this stately, burgundian blend of refosco and mavrodaphne, delivering lean sour-cherry, black raspberry and tobacco, violets and rosemary, all held in the firm yet gentle grip of burnt cinnamon and cedar tannins. and the finish is endless. we're simply delighted we can pour this for you-the sexiest red you'll sip all year, we swear.
pinot noir burgenland, austria. angela michlits is much more than just a world-class vigneron, with her husband werner working closely by her side they manage quite the operation. their demeter certified biodynamic farm is home to several types of grain, an apple orchard, sunflowers, 300+ angus cattle, austria's famous mangalitsa pigs, and of course their winery. the purity in her wines is a direct correlation to her holistic practices in the vineyards and minimalist approach in the winery. this pinot is medium-bodied, slightly savory, and full of life, showing black cherry, cedar, pink peppercorn, and soft tannin.
"semplicemente vino" barbera & dolcetto vino da tavola, italy. wine laws in many of the worlds top regions have become so absurd that great natural producers like stefano and his wife zita bellotti elect to label their unsulfured bottlings "table wine". this bottling "semplicemente vino rosso" , or simply red wine, is a spirited blend of barbera and dolcetto which saw a full three week skin maceration. we absolutley love the texture and suppleness here showing youthful acidity and flavors of lush red fruits, rose petal, saddle leather, and a touch of green olive.
"riserva" lagrein südtirol, italy. lagrein is an ancient varietal that we believe pairs perfectly with chicago's cooler autumn months. indigenous to northern italy's alto adige region, it thrives on the steep rugged slopes of the alps along the isarco river. heinrich mayr of nusserhof farms all of his organic vineyards by hand and holds traditional winemaking to the highest standard in the cellar. this fuller-bodied '06 riserva has terrific grip and a soft core of blue fruit flavors, enhanced by darker notes of black pepper, smoked game, tar and edgy tannin. try this one with some cheese and/or charcuterie!
"carrascal" malbec blend mendoza, argentina. weinert has been a long time rootstock favorite. with an old-world approach and meticulous cellar management they're creating some of mendoza's most exciting wines. this young vine blend of malbec, merlot, and cab sauv is incredibly sleek, with soft acidity, gentle tannin, and succulent flavors of ripe cherry, black currant, toasted oak, and black pepper.
