Elmo
NEW YORK, NY
Always good, nice brunch
Elmo never wows me, but it always serves good food (and tasty martinis!). I'm a big fan of their brunch, but their lunch isn't so bad, either.

John & Tony's
NEW YORK, NY
Old School Italian
Maybe it's the checkered tabletops, but this reminds me of the type of Italian restaurant that used to be throughout Little Italy. Too bad the food isn't great (which also reminds me of the old Little Italy).

Ladies who lunch...
This is definitely for the power-mom set at lunchtime. Wonderful (if overpriced) food and a great atmosphere make this a neighborhood gem. I'm a bigger fan of the one in Meatpacking, but this is a nice addition to uptown.

Nice Neighborhood French
While this isn't someplace to write home about, the nice, airy atmosphere and solid food make it a great neighborhood restaurant.

Bacon Pizza!
Ray's is a lot more money than Zesty, one block away, but sometimes, you just need a meaty bacon pizza!

Don Pedro's

Good Mexican
There's not that many places around here to get decent, relatively-high-end Mexican, so it's nice to have Don Pedro's around.

Ray's Pizza
NEW YORK, NY
Not the original
Lots of people seem to like this Rays anyway, though. And, if you're out late on this particular strip of the Lower East Side, it's the only good pizza option around.

Nathan's Famous
NEW YORK, NY
Sort of real Nathan's
It's not as good as the real, original one on Coney Island (although they all taste like they use the Nathan's you can buy in the store), but, in a pinch -- and in this neighborhood -- it's pretty good. Crif Dogs is better, though.

Love this place
Ok, so it stinks that there's almost always a wait for a table, but isn't this just the kind of place that you'd want to wait for?

La Palapa

Great Neighborhood Mexican
Don't confuse this La Palapa with the one in the West Village, even if they're owned by the same people and have the same menu. This one is fantastic Mexican food (not to mention great drinks, too).

Servicable BBQ
This isn't a great BBQ place by any measure, and it's a bit expensive for what it is, but it'll do in a pinch.

Hate it
Last time I went here, I had to send back not one, but two different entrees. The only saving grace was the drinks.

Slipping, but good
The food here seems to have slipped a bit since Batali opened Del Posto, but the wine list is excellent and the pizza is still yummy.

josie's

Organic Everything
So the food here is all healthy, which is great when you get something that sounds healthy, but doesn't work as well when you try to get something like their air-cooked fries. I wish that their menu was a little more consistent.
