The Scene
Located on Independence just across from Central Piedmont Community College, the restaurant is in part of the old Douglas Furs store and warehouse. Rather than deny its roots, Cuisine Malaya celebrates them with touches like exposed ductwork and ceiling supports.
The Food
Most of the menu items appear in Chinese, and the English descriptions reveal their origins--either Chinese, Malay or Indian. If you like it hot, make sure to tell your server. Even the items marked with a star for ''spicy'' may be a little blander than expected.
On the lower level is a sushi bar, where you can choose from a menu of 50 items, including nigiri and rolls of smoked salmon, eel, flying fish roe, giant clam and quail egg. (Sushi is also available at the tables.) Don't miss the Charlotte roll, a combination of salmon, cream cheese and avocado, or the spider rolls, with hunks of fried softshell crab.
