The Scene
Housed in a converted Washington Avenue warehouse storefront, Wasabi deftly balances its large, raw space with tasteful Japanese accents. Soft lanterns, bamboo columns and tea-house music create a serene vibe. The kimono-clad staff attends to patrons' needs without being intrusive, allowing a wide swath of under-40 downtowners to sit back and enjoy the artistry of the food.
The Food
From hot hand towels to hand-pressed mochi profiteroles, Wasabi's staff delights in making your meal a pleasurable experience. Delicate gyoza dumplings satisfy without being filling; the cucumber snomono salad is light and refreshing. But the real star is master chef and co-owner Jong Wook's menu of signature seafood dishes. The popular Wasabi special features a California roll with tuna and tempura nuggets, drizzled with a wasabi cream eel sauce. Sashimi and nigiri lovers won't find fresher fish this close to the Mississippi. Fried or mochi ice cream, both house specialties, make for delightful cappers.
