The Scene
The Southern Pit's interior is reminiscent of a country inn, with its sturdy furniture and family photos. Off the bustling front entrance, three adjacent rooms with paneling and hardwood floors keep it simple. The space is minimally decorated in neutral hues; however, an abundance of pig trinkets and souvenirs are bound to catch your eye.
The Food
Smoky meats are rich in flavor and tender to the bone. The chicken is succulent and the ribs are robust--each seasoned and cooked over hickory wood. An array of sandwiches are offered, but it's the pulled turkey Q that will win you over with its tenderness and savory house dressing. Tantalizing sides include the mustard-based potato salad and baked beans in a sensational sweet and spicy sauce. Desserts, though not the focus, are worthy of attention, especially the Alabama apple cake flavored with cinnamon and chunks of fruit.
