The Scene
You'll need to slip down a side street to enter this local culinary institution. But once you've passed through the unassuming, off-the-beaten-track entryway, you'll be transported to an 18th-century English wharfside tavern where hunter green walls sport period lithographs and pub memorabilia and seafaring mementos abound. Live jazz in the adjacent bar enlivens the scene most nights of the week with a distinctly American flair.
The Food
Bertha's is famous for its mussels, yet plenty of other appetizing entrees are available like a to-die-for shellfish royale enlivened by a cream sauce flavored with sherry and the Pelican shrimp which finds a quiet accent in the addition of mild jalapenos to the wrap of cream cheese and bacon. Whether you opt for seafood, broiled meats or rice dishes, follow up your meal with the brandy-soaked Scottish trifle. It's pleasantly potent.
