The Scene
Tucked away in the basement of an old house in historic Mount Vernon, this popular Indian restaurant exudes a cozy warmth with its candlelit brick-faced interior. Suited customers find further comfort by plunking down in one of the plush leather banquettes while the sight of serene Indian artwork and the sound of traditional music complete the reposeful mood.
The Food
Akbar offers a broad variety of Northern Indian dishes--from the Anglo-influenced Mulagatawny soup (a.k.a. pepper water) to the smorgasbord of a vegetarian Thali. Whether you're ordering tandoori kabob baked in a charcoal oven or the more adventurously flavored shrimp vindaloo, the menu's spiciness ranges from understated mild to a throat-scorching hot. Should you decide to go for the zing, be sure to order one of the palate-cleansing breads--stuffed with tempting ingredients like dried fruits or nuts. Kheer and Kulfi, the almond-inflected rice pudding and ice cream respectively, will cool you down come dessert.
