The Scene
The family behind the Back Bay's Kebab 'n' Curry and Harvard Square's Bombay Club operate this elegant Indian restaurant in Needham's town center. The expansive, stylish dining room and bar area maintain a stylish edge, thanks to elephant carvings and sharp blue lighting. The unique, nine-seat ''spice bar'' deservedly attracts the most attention: A chef prepares a pre-set menu, carefully explaining the use of spices in each dish. Service in all corners is attentive and accommodating.
The Food
A surprising number of families fills the dining room to devour steaming copper pots of Northern Indian favorites like creamy chicken masala and potent Rogan josh (a lamb curry that, like most dishes, can be toned-down in terms of spice for the kids). Among the starters, top choices include crisp vegetable pakoras and lightly-fried eggplant fritters. Cardamom-scented kulfi (an ice cream-like dessert) makes a soothing finish.
