The Scene
White linen tablecloths and neat and attentive waitstaff signal the upscale breeding behind this fancier, more formal restaurant than most in Chinatown. It's a good place for a date or serious (but inexpensive) business entertaining.
The Food
Chef C.K. Sau is versed in both Shanghai and Cantonese styles, creating bold meat plates and subtle seafood. Rich dishes with hot garlic sauce (shredded pork and chicken) or spicy orange sauce make for hearty winter dining. Sau is adept at using locally available materials--sea bass for a truly delectable Hunan whole fish, though tradition dictates freshwater fish. Forget breaded appetizers (though beef teriyaki is fine, and boneless spare ribs are sublime) and opt for an entree per person, rice and a big plate of pea tendrils sauteed with garlic. Don't worry about the ''hot'' stars--even the spiciest dishes are gentle.
