The Scene
Mr. Dooley's sports the same lived-in feeling as a favorite pair of beat-up shoes. Down to the floorboards, the pub shows its age, but the tattered vibe is comfortable rather than disturbing. Portraits of notable Irishmen (including Mr. Dooley) peer down from dark green walls, onto patrons crammed into tiny tables and high-backed wooden booths. The mostly Irish staff greets customers warmly.
The Draw
This cozy, triangle-shaped tavern's atmosphere is unmatched by larger Irish pubs in the vicinity. A lack of gimmicks--and the absence of the seedy pick-up vibe of other nearby pubs--make this a reliable spot for a pint and a good time. Customers come from all walks of life, but by the end of some nights, everyone is clapping and foot-stomping along with traditional Irish tunes. A straightforward menu of pub fare (burgers, shepherd's pie, fish and chips) and creamy pints of Guinness prove popular at all hours.
