The Scene
Foggy blue walls decorated with cartoons echo Monica's logo--a bespectacled Italian grandmother offering up a plate of pasta--lending a playful air to the tranquil dining room. The Mendoza family (which also operates Monica's Pizzeria and the Italian grocery Monica's Salumeria) toils away behind the scenes, contributing to every aspect of the restaurant's operation, from kitchen work to the decorations. Non-intrusive service helps patrons pair their dinner selections with interesting wines from Argentina, Australia, California, Chile, Italy and Umbria.
The Food
Monica's ever-changing menu ranges from classic to creative. The signature ''pasta fatta a mano'' (hand-crafted pasta) dishes feature standby favorites like gnocchi al forno, baked and flavored with smoky scamorza cheese. Meat and seafood offerings feature seasonal ingredients, like the pan-roasted Cornish hen over lentils, bacon and seasonal vegetables. Try some locally inspired antipasti--mussels from Stony Island arrive in a smoked tomato broth with garlic and fresh herbs.
