The Scene
Amid a plethora of boutique-y eateries in the North End, L'Osteria's bland decor seems particularly undistinguished. Lackluster service is less than attentive, and the lag time between courses is a bit prolonged. Clamorous kitchen discord interferes with the dining room's otherwise subdued atmosphere every time the doors swing open. The oblong dining room is accommodating for large groups.
The Food
The food takes after its environs. The menu is an extensive laundry list of customary Italian dishes like lasagna, manicotti and veal Parmesan, but without the creative interpretations and enticing flourishes found at other North End eateries. Tortellini soup drowns in a watery yellow broth and flavorless tortellini. Salads are compressed and in disarray from being stacked in the refrigerator, displaying a lack of attention to food presentation. An entree of chicken, mushrooms, artichoke and olives tends toward the mushy, overcooked side, and isn't aided by a soggy tomato sauce.
