The Scene
Some claim it's an Irish pub with a Mexican feel; others say it's a Mexican cantina with an Irish bent. But everyone agrees that this is one of downtown's liveliest establishments. Nestled on a tiny street between Quincy Market, the financial district and the waterfront, ''Jose Mac's'' draws strong after-work crowds on weekdays, while weekends see younger groups arrive to dance the night away. Service is chain-restaurant friendly.

The Draw
By day and early evening, the sight of patrons washing down sizzling platters of fajitas with a Guinness (or fish and chips with a 60-ounce margarita) is commonplace, as area workers and tourists stop by for filling, affordable meals. The singles scene heats up in the evenings, particularly on Thursday through Sunday nights, when DJs and live bands get the crowds moving. Those looking to take a break escape to a second floor oasis of pool tables and comparatively lower decibel levels.
