The Scene
Upon entering Il Villaggio's tiny storefront, many patrons feel as if they've entered a tiny Italian trattoria. With enough room for only a bustling open kitchen and about 20 seats, the restaurant's cozy environs are ideal for those on a romantic date. When the dining area is full, those waiting for a table must stand outside and observe bustling Hanover Street (an unenviable task come wintertime). Heavily accented servers cheerfully try to satisfy customers' whims.
The Food
In offering an extensive menu of conventional Italian favorites (cheesy chicken parmigiana, bland mozzarella-tomato salad), the kitchen breaks no new ground when it comes to North End dining. Prices are fair, though quality is inconsistent (steer clear of the house antipasto, in which some of the vegetables are vinegary and over-marinated). Stick to one of the made-to-order risottos (the chicken variety features fresh vegetables and tender chunks of bird) or the daily fresh fish special.
