The Scene
Spread out over four floors of the historic Castle at Park Plaza (built in 1891), Smith & Wollensky attracts wealthy tourists and Boston's high rollers. The handsome first-floor dining room, formerly a gunroom and museum floor, is filled with handsome woods, crackling fireplaces and antique flags. The cocktail lounge and fourth-floor banquet hall are popular among captains of commerce, as is the astronomically pricey, all-American wine list. When all 400-plus seats are filled, dutiful servers navigate the masses with grace.
The Food
Large, expensive cuts of beef fill Wollensky's tables and often end up in doggie bags (the 28-ounce Colorado ribsteak is not for the timid). Signature starters include earthy split pea soup and meaty crabcakes, though some head straight for crackling pork shanks and hulking cuts of prime rib. Troths of creamed spinach and lobster fried rice complete most dinners. Top dessert options include daunting slices of carrot or coconut cakes.
