The Scene
Though the Newbury Street Emack's isn't the popular local chain's original location, it's certainly the busiest. On most summer nights, lines of locals and tourists spill out of the second-floor shop, sometimes reaching the sidewalk. Inside, there's hardly any room for patrons to enjoy ultra-thick frappes and shakes. Friendly, youthful scoopers do their best to keep the lines moving (the ever-changing menu of about 50 flavors presents a problem for indecisive patrons).
The Food
A cornerstone of the local ice cream scene for over 20 years, Emack and Bolio's continues to be renowned for its gourmet ice cream and frozen yogurt; its fresh fruit smoothies, micro-brewed sodas and hand-roasted coffees also merit a look. Ice cream aficionados (and environmentalists) applaud Emack's disdain for modified dairy products, while kids approve of offbeat flavors like Caramel Moose Prints (butterscotch ice cream with caramel and chocolate peanut butter cups).
