On this otherwise quiet stretch of the South End, the Buttery is an easy target with its unrelenting congregation of patrons, their dogs and the errant baby stroller. Mornings are a non-stop bustle of locals in and out the door for their requisite coffee, made-to-order breakfast sandwiches or one of several achingly flaky pastries. As the day wears on, the bistro's kitchen fortifies the bakery's offerings, extending the menu with lunch options, weekend brunch, dinner and take-out. The dining room in the back is a warmer, roomier extension of the front cafe's Tetris game of tables, chairs and waiting patrons. Try the Welsh Rarebit Benedict for brunch, the monkfish for dinner or any of their homemade scones and jams--you'll be sold.
