The Scene
Don't be disarmed by the simplicity of the interior here; the food will eclipse any qualms aroused by the plain diner-like surroundings. Boisterous conversations between restaurant staffers taking breaks and colorful regulars catching up on neighborhood news drown out Italian tunes crooned by Frank and Dean. All diners are treated like family; waitresses don't hesitate to weigh in with grandmotherly tips like ''you look a little thin--have some more pasta.''
The Food
From thick and creamy pasta fagiole to melt-in-your-mouth manicotti, massive portions of masterfully created Italian standbys shine with fresh ingredients. Homemade fusilli is a favorite among locals; it's available with a range of sauces, pesto to Bolognese, all homemade. Veal saltimbocca, a renowned favorite, is an overflowing plate of finely sliced veal rolled with bold proscuitto in a sharp white wine sauce. Be sure to save room for dessert, a rotating selection of delicious Italian pastries from Hanover Street's finest bakeries.
