One of the North End's top spots for a casual dinner offers generous servings of upscale Italian fare.

The Scene
Though Pomodoro isn't as big or stylish as Hanover Street's other trattorias, it stands out by being communal and fun. Small tables--already crowded by bottles of mineral water, mounds of bread and bowls of olive oil--fill up quickly, causing an equal mix of tourists and locals to form a line outside. Social servers are quick to greet regular customers and point out favorite menu items.

The Food
With a menu that redefines the concept of Italian fare as comfort food, the kitchen provides patrons with a satisfying spot in which to enjoy a full meal or a light bite. Even the simplest of dishes arrive with a gourmet touch: An order of lightly fried calamari comes with a bowl of chunky plum tomato sauce; a succulent veal chop is served over a mound of zesty lemon risotto and savory mixed mushrooms.
