The Scene
Down-market and informal, Jack's is everything you'd expect from a restaurant grafted onto a wholesale-fish distributor. Stuffed fish and deer heads stare down from white-paneled walls; a few utilitarian Formica tables and a storefront-length bar provide quick seating for a mixed blue/white-collar crowd. Counter service is prompt and flirtatious.

The Food
The menu features local lunch-counter classics with modern, updated flavors: peppery mixed greens replace iceberg in salads and ''dressed'' sandwiches; perfectly fried calamari provide a solid alternative to the usual shrimp/oyster/catfish trifecta. The kitchen's best work is highlighted on the specials board, like tender, stuffed mirliton topped with sautéed shrimp and chili cream sauce; blackened drum; fried green tomatoes with tangy shrimp remoulade. Some specials have become year-round classics, including messy 12-napkin po'-boys with smothered duck or pan-fried rabbit tenderloin. Light eaters can make a meal out of the sizeable red beans or meaty rice dressing side dishes.
