The Scene
Trompe l'oeil murals and iron railings create a pseudo-piazza setting in this bi-level dining mecca that's usually packed to the rafters with sophisticated suburbanites and abuzz with voices and clinking silverware. The chef makes frequent appearances to deliver a dish or recommend a wine.
The Food
Sicilian-born Gaetano di Benedetto (Bice, Becco d'Oro) crafts true Italian cooking, as stimulating to the imagination as to the palate. Seafood and handmade pasta dominate the extensive menu. Succulent, tempura-fried zucchini blossoms stuffed with airy pecorino cheese mousse bed down on fried green tomatoes in a tangy-creamy tomato sauce. Perfectly balanced on the cusp of creamy and earthy, pappardelle pasta with a trove of various wild mushrooms is worth every penny of its wallet-slimming price tag. Ono (wahoo), crabmeat and marlin are sheathed cannelloni-style in paper-thin butternut squash and decadently sauced with morels, truffles and Parmesan. Zabaglione with Marsala and seasonal fruits is adult candy.
