The Scene
An all-you-can-eat attitude adjustment turned Brazilian Sal & Carvao into this oddly similar global redo. A monster makeover replaced the handsome modern environs with new handsome modern environs of stonework, mosaic and wood, with a massive central salad bar. Now you use a rock instead of a disk to telegraph your appetite-meter. Service is eager and friendly though not always in sync.
The Food
Echoes of the former concept notwithstanding, you still can't get this kind of juicy, char-grilled flavor at home. Fifteen or so varieties including beef cuts, lamb chops, Parmesan pork, beef ribs, and sausage circle the room on skewers, borne by deft kitchen staff in normal clothes. Self-serve salads, smoked salmon, charcuterie, cheeses and soups compete with scrumptious side-dish specials like galic mashers and creamy sautéed spinach to minimize your meat consumption. Desserts like chocolate-hazelnut mousse cake are adequate, but why keep the weird papaya cream from the past?
Hits: The feasting is fun, and the meats and cocktails are juicy.
Misses: The same format with similar food, setting and prices makes one wonder why they bothered ''reconcepting.''
