The Scene
This absolutely cozy Oak Park outpost has an escapist, French-country feel, with a classic honeycomb tile floor, warm red and yellow walls, silvery tin ceiling and storefront windows. Les coqs (roosters) predominate among the rustic artifacts. Diners often make this their spot after a poetry reading or other event at the library next door.
The Food
The menu showcases classic French bistro cuisine, with a few specials like sensational mussels, which change periodically: perhaps braised in chardonnay with Israeli couscous and creamy saffron sauce, or maybe served in garlic parsley sauce. Other classic appetizers are onion tart and escargots, served in-shell. Signature entrees include coq au vin (chicken in red wine) with mushrooms, peas and bacon, plus filet of sole with shrimp-topped shrimp souffle, and bacon-wrapped Chateaubriand for two. Desserts feature peach crepes and a trio of cremes brulees.
