The Scene
Slow-turning fans, potted palms and patterned marble floors make settling into the hushed, garden-level restaurant in the distinguished Write Inn a pleasant, relaxing experience. The come-as-you-are vibe envelops both those staying in the landmark hotel and the Oak Park dwellers who pop in while walking by.
The Food
The hearty menu boasts a full slate of French classics. Frisee salad with bacon and poached egg is a delightful starter spritzed lightly with vinaigrette; rich, gruyere-blanketed onion soup gratinee is a tall, soothing brew that benefits from the addition of a still-crunchy, broth-soaked baguette slice. Entrees are rich and satisfying, from flaky halibut crusted with herbaceous mushroom duxelle atop creamy mashed potatoes to roasted chicken a la Grand Mere with a foundation of velvety, mushroom cream sauce and side of fried onion straws. The piece de resistance? Cloud-like chocolate Grand Marnier soufflé topped with real whipped cream.
