The Scene
Tucked in among a number of similar places along Dempster in Skokie, Hub's has a decent-sized patio out front, with a dining room. Order at the counter, then wait for your number to be called. While the menu reads the same as at many Chicago fast-food joints, Hub's goes above and beyond in several ways--real dishes and silverware, copious quantities and true Greek authenticity.
The Food
The village salad is served as it should be: no lettuce, but an abundance of tomatoes, cucumbers, onions and olives, topped by a massive slice of feta cheese and served with a grilled pita. The gyro plate features enough meat off the spit to serve at least two, plus it comes with fries or rice. Souvlaki, pork or chicken, is served off the skewer, but either way, it's char-grilled to perfection.
