The Scene
A stunning thirteen dining rooms branch out in all directions from the lobby of this maze-like restaurant, which seats a whopping 1,100 patrons. Check in at the front, but be sure to remember the name of the dining room you've been assigned. Grandfather clocks, old photos and kitschy craft displays adorn the lobby walls. Service is fast and friendly.
The Food
Pressure-cooked, then flash-fried, fried chicken comes out tender and juicy, with a light crust of secret-recipe breading. For $12.25 get a half-chicken (four pieces), fries or baked or mashed potatoes with chicken gravy, and a table full of relishes: cole slaw (with an oil and vinegar dressing, not mayo), cottage cheese, bean salad (with a mayo dressing), pickled beets and positively addictive corn fritters (dusted with powdered sugar). The menu also offers T-bone and rib-eye steaks (huge--12 to 25 ounces--and grilled to perfection), whitefish and fried shrimp.
