The Scene
Since opening in 1982, Perry's lunchtime lines have run out the door. But the wait is part of the experience. During the usual 15-minute crawl to the counter, read posted humorous newspaper clippings and memorize a kinder Soup Nazi-like list (e.g., ''Don't ask for anything low-fat''). Best of all: Answer trivia questions thrown out by Perry himself over the loudspeaker.
The Food
The sandwiches are enormous. Egg salad on wheat (with extra Muenster cheese, as recommended by the staff) is just what it should be. Frenchy's Fantasy--one of Perry's famous triple-deckers--combines mounds of rare roast beef, Swiss cheese, sugar-cured bacon, lettuce and tomato and tops it with Russian dressing. These big boys are almost impossible to eat with bare hands--hence the fork stuck in each sandwich. All sandwiches come with macaroni salad or coleslaw, tiny plastic containers that add the perfect touch to an otherwise extra-large meal.
