The Scene
Bold yellow, orange and red walls, metal sunburst mirrors, and a splashy Latin-themed mural enliven this cozy, candlelit room a block south of the Sheridan El stop. The small, open space hums with traditional music as couples and groups settle in at scattered tables; friendly servers keep things flowing smoothly.
The Food
Caliente's traditional Latin plates are simple and satisfying, with fresh ingredients and full, clean flavors. Complimentary chipotle-rubbed bread paves the way for delicious starters like moist, falling-apart tender pork tamales, zesty tequila-marinated shrimp and flaky empanadas stuffed with sirloin, potato, or savory-sweet guava. Tacos stuffed with delectable carne asada or slow-roasted pork make a great main plate; more sophisticated entrees include rich, lovely goat cheese- and poblano-stuffed chicken breast and seafood enchiladas in sweet-hot plum jalapeno sauce. To top it all off, chewy caramelized plantains with dulce de leche ice cream--a decadent treat.
