The Scene
On 62 acres of black-lava shoreline, conference attendees, young families, tennis pros and Japanese tourists wait for electric trams to whisk them to rooms, restaurants or swimming areas; boats float along a lazy salt waterway to the same destinations, past palm trees, orchids, flamingos and swans.
The Details
Three hotel towers have flora-filled atriums with rattan and teak furniture. The 1,240 guest rooms are done in tropical colors, natural woods and marble accents; each has a private lanai or balcony. Amenities include a spa, tennis courts and two golf courses--but the highlight is the ocean-fed lagoon, where guests can snorkel, kayak or paddle-boat with tropical fish and huge green sea turtles. Of the 18 on-site restaurants and bars, the lobby's Malolo Lounge is the hangout of choice. Inspired by Hawaii-bound 1920s steamships, it's open late and offers cocktails, pupus, billiards, cigars and live jazz.
