The Scene
The location of this legendary hotel is incredible. The Mauna Kea volcano dominates on one side, while the Pacific Ocean and a gorgeous bay sit on the other. Since Laurance Rockefeller opened it in 1965, the elegant resort has set the standard for excellence.
The Details
After nearly three decades of appearing consistently at the top of nearly every list of the world's best resorts, this place closed in the mid 1990s for renovations. It re-emerged with changes most notable for their subtlety--new marble and tile, original watercolors in the rooms and furnishings of rattan and willow. Also spruced up was the Robert Trent Jr.-designed 18-hole golf course, rated one of the finest in the world. Thankfully, one thing that hasn't changed is the extraordinary display of priceless Asian and Pacific art and artifacts. Batik restaurant offers cuisine with continental overtones, and the Hau Tree serves lunch overlooking the shoreline. Tuesday night luaus include an island feast and authentic Hawaiian show.
