The Scene
An unusual mix of Japanese businessmen, couples on dates and nervous-looking families gather around Shogun's large hibachi tables. There's little mingling between groups, but as the food starts appearing--sizzling-hot from the grill--diners loosen up and the room fills with a happy hum. Don't come here expecting shrimp tosses, free comedy shows or death-defying knife tricks; do come for excellent food and super-attentive service.
The Food
Freshness and timing allow Shogun's sushi and hibachi to transcend ordinary strip mall cuisine and blossom into something extraordinary. Shogun rolls, similar to rainbow rolls, arrive jewel-bright and tender. Filet mignon is served buttery and juicy; scallops arrive crisp on the outside, tender on the inside, and with their sweet, mild flavor intact. Only pedestrian chicken receives less-than-stellar attention, staying far too long on the grill and arriving tough and gummy.
