The Scene
A former drugstore made semi-famous in John Berendt's ''Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil,'' Clary's now sports a stained glass rendering of the novel's dust jacket inside. Locals congregate for breakfast and gossip; tourists visit in droves for a taste of the ''Midnight'' lore. Whether you sit at the soda fountain bar or in the dingy main room, you're likely to overhear at least one conversation about ''the book'' that put Savannah in the spotlight.
The Food
Breakfast is what Clary's does best: fluffy pancakes, fat omelets with a variety of fixings, not-too-runny grits. Lunch choices are abundant and mostly solid. A triple-decker club sandwich with crispy bacon must be dismantled before it'll fit in your mouth. Shrimp salad on a croissant is fresh-tasting, with a nice hint of dill. Dense malts from the fountain are a pain to suck through a straw, but definitely worth the effort.
