The Scene
Don't be thrown off by the shabby look of this out-of-the-way spot: Grab one of the booths along the wall and wait for the fun to begin. Lovely silk fabrics hang from the ceiling in a halfhearted attempt to give the place an exotic air. The amusing owner makes corny jokes with everyone--it's just part of the experience.
The Food
There's no menu, no meat and no choice in the matter of your meal. A few minutes after you sit down, someone from the kitchen wheels out a cart with thalis--circular metal trays--for everyone at the table. A thali typically holds dhal (spiced semi-pureed beans), potato curry and another vegetable curry (perhaps eggplant, cauliflower or an unusual Indian squash), fresh bread--either naan or poori (puffy fried bread)--homemade yogurt, plain rice, and a little something sweet. Everything's delicious, and it's all-you-can-eat. Don't forget to ask for the wonderful chutneys.
