The Scene
Drawn curtains in the windows puzzle first-timers, but a steady stream of locals enters this hidden restaurant with confidence. The tidy dining room is simply decorated with hanging fabrics and Indian bric-a-brac. Servers are efficient and self-assured.
The Food
What this typical Indian fare lacks in innovation, it makes up for with execution. Saag paneer (spinach with fresh cheese), smoky chicken tikka masala and aloo paratha (whole-wheat griddle bread stuffed with potatoes and peas) are faithfully rendered classics. Dal makni (lentils in a buttery, gently spiced curry) is an unexpected pleasure. Beef, rarely seen in Indian restaurants, appears on this menu: Try the beef sheekh kabob, a complexly flavored variation on sausage. Sensual rice pudding with coconut and cardamom is a must.
