The Scene
Sitting in an abbreviated strip of restaurants and bars across the street from the Publix at Piedmont development, Aloha comes up short in the atmosphere department. From the hand-painted sign out front to the mix-and-match art that lines the muted yellow walls, it all feels a bit slapdash. The handsome L-shaped wooden sushi bar adds a touch of class, as does the extremely gracious service. A small concrete patio offers outdoor dining.
The Food
Curiously, there are no Hawaiian dishes on the predominantly Chinese-and-sushi menu. Of the Chinese selections, the chef's specialties are a good bet. Fried nuggets retain their crunch in General Tso's chicken. Shrimp in plum sauce served with thin spring pancakes gets the salty-sweet balance just right. Salt and pepper squid, however, suffers from too much of both seasonings. Nigiri sushi--especially tuna and salmon--is fresh, though cuts can be on the stingy side. Rolls are much more generous and deftly prepared. Try the signature Aloha roll--tuna and salmon flash fried in tempura batter and served with a spicy mayo dipping sauce.
