The Scene
Wedged into a sharply canting asphalt hillside, this red cinderblock stand sports splashy, cartoon-art billboards and a small, partially enclosed patio. In the tiny main room recycled bus seats are jammed around heavily lacquered camp tables; fans circulate a warm, sticky breeze. Imagine away the traffic outside and you're at the funnel cake booth at the county fair.

The Food
Best known for its Philly cheese steak, Woody's also serves six kinds of subs, two kinds of sausage and a ''fat'' hot dog, plus shakes, floats and sundaes. While the centerpiece cheese steak rates as a solid hangover cure, the Italian sub (salami, provolone, lots of oil, vinegar and oregano) or the Italian sausage (a messy triumph of grilled onions, peppers and ''special sauce'') turn out to be better sandwiches. Milkshakes are nothing special, but the orange freeze (heavy on the vanilla bean ice cream) is a modest retro pleasure.
