The Scene
Mirage's decor is simple but comfortable: Doric columns, black metal furniture dressed with white tablecloths, sedate artwork and a tasseled swag above the windows facing the patio and parking lot. A table at the front of the restaurant features Iranian magazines and Farsi ads. Traditional music plays as the smiling servers circulate through the room, happy to answer any questions the descriptive menu doesn't.
The Food
Start with a sampler combination of refreshing shirazi salad spiked with lime juice; two different smoky eggplant spreads; and savory dolmeh, peppers stuffed with minced lamb. Khorescht-e-Fesenjan, a rich chicken, minced walnut and pomegranate stew, is sweet and sour; Shireen Polo, ''the jewel of Persian rice dishes,'' features orange peel, saffron, barberries, slivered almonds, pistachios and raisins. Meat lovers will adore the Sultan's Kabobs, with juicy filet mignon and ground sirloin skewers. For dessert, try intoxicating rosewater ice cream studded with pistachios.
