The Scene
The original Taco Mac is a Virginia-Highland landmark. Claiming best beer and wings since 1979, the casual meeting spot keeps its customers with a huge beer selection, unpretentious food and no dress code. The laid-back attitude befits the Highlands blend of college students and after-work minglers. Simply decorated with neon beer signs, glass coolers, TVs showing sports and four-seater tall tables, the Mac caters to those who don't want to grow up.
The Draw
The enormous beer selection and non-stop wings make new customers regulars. The wings are customized, available in several different spice levels: mild to Three Mile Island to something called ''death.'' An updated menu offers a fresh change with grilled salmon salad and shrimp fajitas, but keeps the popular Tex-Mex favorites and huge sandwiches. The crowded deck at the bar's corner location of Virginia and Highland Avenues affords prime people-watching all season long.
