The Scene
Families dine merrily together in this melting pot of Virginia Highlands gay and straight culture. A night here is like a night at Lake Woebegone: All the women are strong, all the men are good looking and all the children are above average and surprisingly well behaved. Glowing green walls and you-go-girl paintings complete the look. Don't miss any of the many margarita creations.
The Food
At Caramba you'll find Tex-Mex burritos, fajitas, chalupas--all prepared with a little extra care. Chips might be disappointingly generic, but they're revived by the house salsa or the queso, both of which sing with satisfying jalapeno heat. The traditionally ho-hum tomato sauce that graces the fajita meat and cheese burritos holds a little bit more body and richness than usual. Guacamole benefits from a sinful dose of sour cream as well as pureed-that-day freshness. If you can spare the calories, don't miss the creaminess of the homemade flan that mixes the tastes of custard and tapioca.
