The Scene
Inside, the restaurant is low-lit, quiet and cool, its decor Spanish-style--huge, dark pieces of furniture anchoring the lobby, accented with wrought iron and stained glass. In the dining rooms, there are big, slabby tables and heavily-padded chairs and booths creating an overall effect of timeless permanence that immediately puts its diners at ease.
The Food
Practically anything on the menu is a good bet, but the house specialty is its Spanish- and Cuban-style dishes, like ropa vieja (shredded beef) or boliche, a beef roast stuffed with Spanish-style hot sausage. Still, the versatile kitchen does other items equally well: Try the grouper sandwich. And don't miss dessert, for the Don Jose's smooth, thickly-carameled flan, a classic Spanish pudding, is one of the best in town.
