The Scene
About an hour away from most parts of Orlando, Apopka is a little farther from the tourist areas and the appearance of the Catfish Place, which is as rustic as the name suggests, might give you a moment's pause.
The Food
But inside, plentiful portions of frog legs--strips of Kermit's kin, crunchy and deep fried--and gator tail nuggets are dished up as appetizers. (For the uninitiated, gator really does taste like chicken.) Skip the preliminaries and dive right in to the main course with the house special: a huge platter loaded with boneless catfish tenders, fried shrimp, frog legs, fried scallops, and gator tail. All dinners come complete with a choice of side items like tart coleslaw swimming in dressing, buttery mounds of collard greens, and hash browns topped with melted cheese and onions.
