The Scene
Right off the main drag leading into St. Helena, Taylor's Refresher is a classic burger-and-fries stand, with shady picnic tables out back, screened-in windows for ordering, and an adjacent parking lot filled with the cars of both locals and tourists alike.
The Food
After a weekend full of $14 goat cheese salads, tourists flock to Taylor's Refresher for straight-up normal food, with nary a chervil sprig to be seen. (Of course, locals love it too, for the same reason.) The burgers here are messy affairs--the pretty decent (but not outstanding) patties are loaded up with lettuce, tomato and lots of Russian-dressing style sauce. Fries are fresh-cut and golden fried, and the shakes are super-thick and generously poured.
