In Short
The South Bay has lots of upscale Mexican restaurants, most serving cantina food at hacienda prices. But Ortega 120 earns points for real regional Mexican cooking, albeit with presentations that owe more to culinary school than Mamacita's kitchen. Chef Thomas Ortega tones down the spiciness a bit to please his Caliornia clientele, but his sauces have the intense, complex flavors of the real thing. The taco sampler is most popular, but try the lamb birria or any dish that includes mole sauce for a more authentic taste of Mexico. The decor lends to the experience with a theatrically lit space festooned with Mexican folk art and old posters that may be the most stylish this side of the border.
