The Scene
D'Asaro has it all: a warm, rustic room with white tablecloths, earthenware urns, and a marble counter glistening with antipasti, plus a huge, sun-drenched patio. Diners from Foster City to the Woodside heights--even sheepish emigrants from the City--have embraced it.
The Food
Chef Christopher Fernandez, who started at Oliveto and earned his first stars at Crescent Grill, understands the subtleties of Italian cooking. The roast chicken comes sizzling from the wood-fired oven accompanied by farro pilaf. The Caesar salad is graced by an uncanny touch of sliced gherkins and capers. Chewy ceppo noodles, chunks of pancetta and pecorino romano combine in a pasta all'amatriciana. Pillowy gnocchi are baked under a sweet, concentrated tomato sauce, and seasonal toppings glide over a crackling pizza. To dodge the crowds, spend the afternoon on the patio and sample lunch-only sandwiches like an ethereal open-faced crostini with portobello, black-truffle cream and fontina.
