The Scene
Valeriano's fares well in comparison with any of its nearby clones, serving straight-ahead northern Italian cuisine by way of Northern California. Housed in a former bank, the space has long had a kind of faux-Etruscan style and scale. The atmosphere is defined by soaring ceilings, richly sponged terra-cotta walls and viva-Italia-green wainscoting.

The Crowd
For lunch, Valeriano's tends to a brisk suit-and-cell phone clientele, which at dinner broadens to include date-night types and some family outings.

Bites We Like
Valeriano's Caesar is a solid, workhorse version, and house pastas have many proponents. Linguine and fettucine come paired with suave seafood combinations and stuffed pastas (ravioli, cannelloni, panzerotti) are filled with savory and winning cheeses and doodads.

For Starters
Calamari is pleasant as an appetizer in either of their presentations--sauteed with garlic and chili flakes or deep-fried and served with kicky marinara and aioli.
