The Scene
Dan Gordon and Dean Biersch started their empire in the mid '80s in Palo Alto, Calif., and quickly opened locations in San Jose and San Francisco. The San Jose spot is a hit with the after-work yuppie crowd and has a particularly attractive patio area.
Booze and Food
Unlike many brewpubs, which often focus on English-style drinks (lagers, stouts, ISBs), Gordon Biersch is firmly centered in Germany. The best and most popular brew is the amber-colored, richly flavored Marzen. As for food, the knock-you-out garlic fries are legendary. Also try the barbecue-duck spring rolls, baby-back ribs, lamb shanks and simple pizzas.
