The Scene
The word ''lively'' doesn't begin to describe the boisterous atmosphere at Puccini & Pinetti. It's mere steps from Union Square, the Powell Street cable-car turnaround and the theater district. It's often crowded with tourists and other fun-seekers. The cheerful, primary-color murals, house-specialty drinks and super-friendly staff all make for a vivacious experience.
The Food
Given the festive atmosphere, it's not surprising that the more casual, fun menu items are best bets. A practically greaseless fritto misto is an addictive tumble of calamari, fennel, zucchini and paper-thin slices of lemon. The thin-crusted sausage pizza is satisfyingly gooey with melted cheese and hunks of spicy sausage. Pastas are well-prepared, like the linguini with clams. Lunch options include a beefy rib eye steak piadine served burrito-style, wrapped in more of that good pizza crust.
