The Scene
Slocum House has won its share of accolades because of its romantic ambience--and with good reason. The setting is quiet, classy and intimate (the color scheme is cream-on-cream), and the young serving staff is hover-over-your-shoulder attentive.
The Food
The menu is generous enough to include quesadillas, but fine French cuisine is still the specialty. Many selections are as tastefully subdued as the decorating; escargot has a welcome piquance, and the chef uses only the freshest herbs and vegetables. But much of the food lacks bite. The dinner entrees include an extensive selection of meats, ranging from filet mignon to pork tenderloin to a slightly undercooked quail dish, but the appetizers--especially the breaded Brie plate with apples and walnuts--tend to be more intriguing and reliable.
